Question: Nasolacrimal duct abnormality
A 2 month old alpaca cria needs to have surgery to open her nasal accial duct.
In your school's experience how often do complications occur, such as healing closed or corneal abrasions? I'm told the surgery leaves little to no scarring (the alpaca will be show quality once of age) and takes no more than 30 minutes. The cria would not be intubated. Stitches remain in 10-14 days. Does all this sound reasonable in your experience? Any precautions or warnings?
Thanks for your opinion!
Answer:
We have a 15% complication rate. Usually stricture of opening requiring second surgery, but occassionally an ulcer or other problem. 99% resolve without untoward effects though.
