Question:  Meningeal Worm Prevention

I'm a small alpaca breeder (only ten alpacas so far) and I have a question about the protocol for preventing/treating meningeal worm.  I currently give my alpacas an injection of Dectomax every other month, but I'm concerned that this may not be enough - I understand there are current cases of meningeal worm in my immediate area.

Is it advisable to alternate the Dectomax injections with Panacur?  Should I step up the treatments from every other month to every six weeks?  Also, we have three pregnant females, a pregnant nursing mom, and a 4 1/2 month old cria.  Will the Panacur harm them?  And the last question (I promise!)  I've seen Panacur in a tube - is it OK to give them that, or should I find injectable Panacur - if such a thing exists?

If you would be kind enough to answer in your free time, I'd really appreciate it.

Answer:

We now think that the protective period for dectomax is 45 days, so I have been recommending a 6 week interval for doramectin. Panacur is one of the safest deworming drugs we have available.  No injectable panacur - only tube paste and suspension and a feed supplement are available.
