I recently started an alpaca farm. I was sent information about diatomaceous earth being a safe parasite control for animals. The article says it can be used both for internal and external parasite control. The information can be found at hydromall.com. There are suggested feeding and application rates for various animals but no mention of the alpaca. I was wondering if you have heard of this? If so, is it safe for the alpaca.

I recently attended your camelid health, medicine and management course. I would like to thank you for all the information and time spent with us at the seminar as I learned alot and the information is very helpful in my daily care of the alpacas.

Answer:

There is no scientific evidence to support use of DE for parasite control with the exception that DE, when fed, may cause decreased hatchability of internal parasite eggs and thus decrease pasture contamination. It certainly can not be used to "deworm" or "delouse" alpacas.
